After studying this afternoon, I found myself at a presentation by urban farmer extraordinaire, the lovely Annie Novak (pictured above).
I knew she was coming to Cornell, but after Stone Barns (aka: one of the best places ever/my summer job for the past 5 summers) tweeted about her the other day I figured I just had to go!
Her talk was great! Topics were only skimmed, but it was so interesting to hear about what comes with starting an urban rooftop farm such as finding a building owner who is willing to pay for the extremely expensive installation of a green roof and let you farm, to plants you can/can’t grow because shallow soils, to roof benefits such as their cooling effect (not heat retaining like tar roofs/much more energy efficient in the summer) and they hold some rain water (sewage systems in cities get messed up when it rains because there’s too much water to treat so all the rainwater + sewage just ends up who knows where (yikes…)).
After hearing her speak I came to the realization that she may actually have my dream job. She gets to farm, work with children, cook, be outside, be an entrepreneur, run marathons, and travel during the colder months of the year (aka: SKI SEASON!)… I have much to consider….
