  • Notes from an EnvironMentalist: Collegetown Composting

Maybe you remember my crazy long report on composting. If it’s not obvious, I love composting. I think everyone should do it and hate when I can’t.

Fortunately, this year, the CU Compost Club got a subscription for an off-campus compost bin for students who…live off-campus and want to compost! (AKA: ME!!)
So that’s been happening. The lovely roommates and I have been composting!

    To compost we:
    1. Put our compostables in old plastic takeout containers to freeze so they don’t smell bad or attract insects .
    2. Once our freezer gets out of control with containers (~4 days time), it’s time to take them out and I use my kitchen scale and weigh them—this isn’t necessary, but I find it interesting to see how well we’re doing and I think it helps motivate the roommates who’ve started composting tons too!*
    3. Then I take them to the large Collegetown compost bin, dump them, and DONE!

*While home over fall break, Lovely Roommate 1 opened her freezer to put an orange peel there only to remember she doesn’t compost at home. So cool that it’s become habitual for her!
